Maps and Charts

Hello and Thank you for your interest in my work. Your comments are welcome!

Maps and Charts are a group of topographical studies of invented space both atmospheric and terrestrial. They are my own personal exploration of the idea of infinity and what the endless path towards it would look like.

I envision infinity as a series of lines, where they begin and continue to go, unrehearsed, rhythmic, sinuous and flowing, - not defining specific form but instead demonstrating speed, energy and direction. The surface on which the lines travel through is thick and bumpy with layers of paint, recalling the various environments along the path to infinity.

Horses in ink watercolor and crayon

I've been incorporating animals into my paintings here and there for a few years now. It's hard not to when you live across the road from a horse farm. I'm still using the same techniques (same process, similar materials) as in the Maps and Charts paintings. My focus has been to examine the way the animals arrange themselves - the mentality of the herd, flock (group). Here's my latest:

Two Brown Horses, Two White Horses, One Horse Blanket, 11 x 20 1/2in. mixed media on paper

The Upper Catskill Community Council on the Arts Show in Oneonta, NY

Yesterday Aug. 20th was the last 'official' day of my show at UCCCA (The Upper Catskill Community Council on the Arts) at the Wilber Mansion in Oneonta, NY. The show ran from Aug. 5th through Aug. 20th. The 20th coincided with the City of the Hills Arts Festival on Main Street. I was in the gallery from 9-1pm to talk to anyone who wanted to talk about art and how beautiful the weather was. Overall it was a good show. The opening was Aug 5th (a Friday), and my most successful day of the duration of the show. Three pieces sold, lots of business cards and price lists were given out and my 2 1/2 year old daughter held it together until the end (almost).

The staff at UCCCA were all very helpful - special thanks to Raina for helping me (or me helping her) install my show. She definitely has an eye for the curatorial part. More thanks to the wonderful people who bought my work. They obviously have a good eye! I hope they enjoy them. And, thanks to my husband for tending to our daughter so I could talk to people.

Sold: Blue Green Layered Space, 17 x 14in., mixed media on paper

Icelandic Horses on Paper

Three Horses with Blue Pine, 7 x 11 1/2 in. gouache and watercolor pencil on watercolor paper.
Sold today! The buyer and I agree - I have the nicest view from my kitchen window. This painting began as another piece in my Maps and Charts series, then took a turn towards the figurative when I couldn't get these horses out of my head. I got them out of my head and onto the paper, and my new 'patron' couldn't get it out of her head when she saw it first at my friend's frame shop, and again at my studio. This is her second purchase from me. I hope she enjoys it!

Four Icelandic Horses on Blue, 30 x 22, watercolor, gouache, and charcoal on watercolor paper.
My new patron's first purchase. She saw this at the Treadwell Stagecoach Run Art Festival two years ago in Treadwell, NY. I was set up (tent and all) in fellow artist Marie Cumming's driveway. I don't remember meeting her (quite a few people came by), but she remembered this piece. She found me again through my friend Rachel who owns the Frame Shop on Main Street in Delhi, NY. She described my work to Rachel who immediately knew who she was talking about. (For many reasons, it's wonderful to have a friend who frames art! Especially when you're an artist who prefers to paint on paper).
